Sony Pictures has announced a September 18, 2026, release date for its upcoming live-action reboot of CAPCOM’s iconic Resident Evil survival horror video game franchise, as reported by entertainment industry publication Deadline. The project is helmed by director Zach Cregger, known for his work on “Barbarian” and “Weapons”.
Production of the reboot will be a collaborative effort between Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions. The screenplay is being co-written by Cregger and Shay Hatten (“John Wick: Chapter 4”, “Army of the Dead”). Producers include Robert Kulzer of Constantin Film, Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment, and PlayStation Productions.
Cregger shared with Deadline, “I’ve been a rabid fan of these games for decades, and to be able to bring this amazing title to life is a true honor.”
Sanford Panitch, president of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, also commented: “Zach is one of the most talented exciting new directors to come on the scene in many years. His brilliant approach in restarting and refreshing this legendary Sony franchise instantly makes this one of our most important releases in 2026.”
The upcoming reboot marks the eighth live-action adaptation of the “Resident Evil” series, following six films starring Milla Jovovich released between 2002 and 2017, and a 2021 reboot, “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.” A CG animated film, “Resident Evil: Death Island,” was released in July 2023.
