A highly anticipated original anime series, “Moonrise,” is set to premiere on Netflix on April 10th. The series, adapted from a novel by acclaimed author Tou Ubukata, promises a grand-scale narrative exploring themes of independence, societal disparity, and the consequences of technological advancement.
“Moonrise” envisions a future where Earth is governed by an international AI network, Sapientia. The AI exiles criminals and pollutants to the Moon, which creates a stark divide, leading to widespread poverty and unrest. After a terrorist bombing by lunar rebels, protagonist Jacob “Jack” Shadow is drawn into the fray. Seeking revenge, Jack joins Earth’s military as a scout on the Moon, where he encounters an unexpected leader within the resistance.
The series boasts a stellar creative team. Masashi Koizuka, known for his work on “Attack on Titan,” directs the project, while WIT Studio, renowned for “Ranking of Kings” and “SPY x FAMILY,” handles the animation production. Character concepts are designed by manga artist Hiromu Arakawa, creator of “Fullmetal Alchemist.” Series protagonist Jack is voiced by Chiaki Kobayashi, also known as the voice of Stark from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.

Director Koizuka expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “This may be WIT Studio’s first space opera. It is our team’s first original work produced with Netflix. There was a real sense of excitement and a sort of madness as we were making it, and I believe that’s visible throughout the series. I’ve looked over the completed footage many times, and it’s clear that the voice actors infused their performances with passion, and the staff elevated the production far beyond what we’d envisioned. I hope everyone will enjoy the results of that synergy.”
Chiaki Kobayashi shared: “I am honored to be voicing Jack in the anime Moonrise. I feel extremely honored to be able to work on this project alongside such wonderful people who I respect very much. As this is an original anime, much of the story remains shrouded in mystery, but the powerful and fast-paced action is incredibly appealing. To ensure that we match the intensity of the amazing animation, we, the cast, are giving it our all, shouting and fighting with all our might. I hope you will watch it and feel the passion that this work embodies. Moonrise!”
“Moonrise” airs on Netflix this April 10.
