A24 Films and Bandai Namco Entertainment have announced that a live-action film adaptation of Elden Ring is currently in the works. The film is set to be a collaboration with writer and director Alex Garland, who previously directed Ex Machina, Annhilation and Warfare for A24.
Released in February 2022, Elden Ring is an action RPG set in a dark fantasy world known as the Lands Between. Players take on the role of the Tarnished, a warrior who must go on a quest to restore the fabled Elden Ring and become the new Elden Lord.
The game is developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, with direction from Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki. Additional worldbuilding was provided by Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin, who is also named as a producer for the live-action Elden Ring movie.
While no release date was announced for the movie, Elden Ring fans will still have their hands full with new content for the game. A new spinoff title, Elden Ring: Nightreign, is set to release next week on May 30; while the Nintendo Switch 2 will recieve a new definitive version of the game, titled Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition.
Live-action adaptations of dark fantasy games seem to be Hollywood’s next big bet. Sandfall Interactive’s breakout hit Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will also get a live-action movie sometime in the near future.
