‘Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’ Will Be Getting A Live-Action Movie Adaptation

Sandfall Interactive’s surprise hit Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is being adapted into a live-action movie – a project that had been planned well ahead of the game’s recent launch. The story was originally reported by Variety back in January 2025.

The game, which recently released on April 24, is well on its way to becoming one of the most successful turn-based games in recent years, having managed to sell over one million copies in just three days. Its movie adaptation appears to still be in early stages of development, with the film still searching for its cast and director.

“We’re thrilled to collaborate with Sandfall Interactive to bring the rich, immersive world of ‘Expedition 33’ to the big screen,” Story Kitchen founders Dmitri M. Johnson & Mike Goldberg told Variety. “The game’s compelling narrative and complex characters provide a solid foundation for a cinematic experience that will resonate with both gamers and moviegoers alike.”

“Partnering with Story Kitchen allows us to expand the universe of ‘Clair Obscur’ beyond the gaming realm,” said Sandfall Interactive’s CEO/Creative Director, Guillaume Broche. “Their expertise in storytelling and passion for our vision make them the perfect team to translate our game into a captivating film.”

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based roleplaying game set in a world inspired by Belle Époque France. The game centers on a god-like figure known as the Paintress, a god-like figure who paints a cursed number on her monolith every year, causing all individuals of that age to vanish. As the number decreases each year, humanity faces impending extinction. Players follow Expedition 33 on a mission to end this cycle by confronting the Paintress before she paints death again.
