Fans of the popular manga series “The Ancient Magus’ Bride” will soon have a new way to experience the beloved series. Bushiroad Games has announced the development of “The Ancient Magus’ Bride: The Phantom Midsummer and the Dreaming Journey”, the first visual novel based on the fantasy manga. The game is slated for release on the Nintendo Switch later this year.
“The Ancient Magus Bride” is a manga series written and illustrated by Kore Yamazaki, telling the story of Chise Hatori, a young girl who decides to put herself up for auction after being ostracised by society. At the auction, she is sold for five million pounds to Elias Ainsworth, a mysterious magus with an animal skull for a head. The series follows Chise’s life as both Elias’s apprentice and bride as she learns to adapt to his magical realm.
The manga was originally published in Mag Garden’s Monthly Comic Blade in 2013, later transitioning to Monthly Comic Garden in 2014 after the former’s cessation. The manga series is currently being published through Bushiroad Works’ Comic Growl website, where it is being published simultaneously in English and Japanese utilizing AI translation by Mantra. The 22nd compiled volume of the manga is scheduled for release on April 8.
The franchise has been adapted to animation many times, beginning with the “Those Awaiting a Star” OVA in 2017. This was followed by a television anime season in the same year, the “The Boy from the West and the Knight of the Blue Storm” OAD from 2021 to 2022, and a second television anime season that aired in two parts in 2023.
