Kinetic Games’ hit horror game Phasmophobia will be joining the long list of videogames currently being adapted into feature films. The developer announced today that a Phasmophobia move is currently in development from Blumhouse.
Blumhouse is best known as the film company behind M3GAN and The Black Phone, and are no stranger to videogame adaptations, having produced the highly successful live-action Five Nights at Freddy‘s movie. The company merged with James Wan’s Atomic Monster in 2022, bringing films such as Annabelle, The Nun and The Conjuring under their umbrella.
“We’re thrilled to officially announce that a Phasmophobia film adaption is in development – it’s a big moment for the whole Kinetic team, and the start of something really exciting,” said Daniel Knight, Director of Kinetic Games and Lead Developer of Phasmophobia.
“We never could’ve imagined the incredible heights this game would reach when it launched five years ago, and we’re so thankful to our amazing community for the lasting impact Phasmophobia has had in the gaming space and beyond. Working with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster marks an incredible new chapter for the game, and we can’t wait to share more as the project develops.”
Phasmophobia is a co-op paranormal investigation game where players must work together to identify and exorcise monsters lurking in a variety of locations. The game first launched in 2020, where, alongside other social games like Among Us and Animal Crossing, it quickly became a massive hit amongst players looking for new ways to connect with friends and family during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Five years on, the game continues to see success, having earned over $23 million in global sales. Kinetic Games also recently announced Chronicle, a new update to the game that will overhaul Phasmophobia’s levelling, rewards and progression systems.
