Aladdin’s live action teaser was released recently and boy, oh boy, are we excited. This live-action version of Aladdin will be directed by Guy Ritchie and will be starring Will Smith. Will Smith will have some large metaphorical shoes to fill as he will be playing the Genie, a role that Robin Williams made iconic with his classic witty banter and speedy lines. You can also see that in the 1987 film, Good Morning Vietnam!
Following the musical trend, like Disney’s Beauty and the Beast remake, Ritchie’s Aladdin will also be a musical. There will even be a new song composed by Alan Menken for Jasmine. Will the music stay true to its roots or will we be getting a few new songs and twists on the original? My best guess is the latter and we won’t be getting a lot of changes but more than one new song does give the musical a breath of fresh air.
The Beauty and the Beast live-action was following the classic so closely that it felt like a worsened version of the original. I hope Disney learned from that mistake and not try to make an exact shot-by-shot live action remake.
I steal only what I can’t afford… and that’s everything – Aladdin
Not much is shown in the teaser but it is enough to get us all excited. It features the newcomer, diamond in the rough, Mena Massoud as Aladdin and only he is allowed to enter the legendary tiger’s mouth, The Cave of Wonders, where the lamp resides. It’s a lion instead of a tiger in the teaser, but I’m not going to hate on the movie just because of a few minor changes.
The Cave of Wonders is aptly named as it looks wondrous even in the world of CGI. Mena Massoud is then seen approaching the lamp and before we can see genie, the teaser ends right there with a date, May 24th 2019. What a tease!
