Aka Akasaka and Mengo Yokoyari’s Oshi no Ko manga will enter its final arc, titled “Hoshi ni Yume ni” (or “Toward the Stars and Dreams”) on June 27th, 2024. The manga will take a one-issue break on June 20th, 2024 before starting its final arc in the 30th issue of Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump magazine.
Originally published in April 2020, the manga follows Gorou, a gynecologist and idol fan who’s in shock after his favorite star, Ai, announces an impromptu hiatus. Little does Gorou realize that he’s about to forge a bond with her that defies all common sense!
The series has been praised for its commentary on the Japanese entertainment industry, specifically revealing the dark side of the idol industry. The manga currently has over 16.5 million copies in circulation, and was nominated for the 28th Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, and the 48th annual Kodansha Manga Awards this year.
In April 2023, the manga was adapted into a television anime produced by Doga Kobo. The anime instantly hit viral status with its 90-minute first episode and opening theme song, Idol, performed by Yoasobi. The anime has a second season premiering this July 3rd, 2024.
The manga is also being adapted into a live-action film and series by Amazon and Toei. The series is slated to premiere this Winter, streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
