Malaysian Animation ‘Kisah Bawah Tanah’ Officially Debuts on Netflix

Malaysian animated series Kisah Bawah Tanah made its Netflix debut in Malaysia on September 16, 2026, bringing its blend of horror comedy, local folklore and Southeast Asian mythology to a wider audience.

Kisah Bawah Tanah is a 2D animated series that combines comedy, horror, folklore and Southeast Asian mythology. The series follows best friends Sam and Zack, who work at a convenience store in an underground world inhabited by supernatural beings.

Their everyday lives are filled with encounters involving Southeast Asian mythical creatures such as toyol, pontianak, pocong and jiangshi, leading to plenty of bizarre and humorous situations. Rather than relying solely on horror, the series mixes supernatural elements with local humour and everyday situations.

Kisah Bawah Tanah also takes a different approach from Malaysian animated productions traditionally associated with children’s and family entertainment. According to co-creator Hendra Wardi, the series incorporates layered humour that allows viewers of different ages to enjoy its stories from their own perspectives.

Alongside its comedy and supernatural elements, the series also touches on themes involving social issues and responsibility, presenting them through a lighthearted mix of humour and fantasy.
