The beloved anime film Spirited Away, by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, will be making stops in Taipei, Tokyo, Toronto, Los Angeles and London as part of its stage play international tour! This news was announced on the stage play’s official website along with a list of dates and venues, stated below:
- National Theater at Taipei, Taiwan: December, 2026 – January, 2027
- Tokyo (as the start of a national tour): March – May 2027
- Princess of Wales Theater at Toronto, Canada: May – August 2027
- Ahmanson Theater at Los Angeles, California: September – October 2027
- London Coliseum at London, England: March – July 2028
Behind The Scenes
Directing the stage-play is Olivier and Tony award-winning director of Les Misérables cum Royal Shakespeare Company’s Honorary Associate Director, John Caird! Working with him is Maoko Imai (who’s also his wife) as assistant director and co-adaptor. The stage play will of course, feature the amazing music of Joe Hisaishi.
The Spirited Away stage play originally opened in Tokyo in 2022, directed by Caird as well, and went on to completed 102 performances . Returning for its second run in August 2023 and March 2024. The stage play then went on to perform at London Coliseum from April to August 2024, making this its second time there. It also won the Best New Play award at the 25th Annual WhatsOnStage Awards in London in 2025.
About Spirited Away
Spirited Away follows the story of Chihiro after her family accidentally wandered into the spirit world. When her parents are cursed to turn into pigs, she must find a way to free herself and her parents, and return to the human world. To do so she takes up a job working for the mean witch, Yubaba. Along the way, she also meets friends like the enigmatic Haku, her senior Lin, and the infamous Kaonashi.
It is widely known as one of the highest-grossing Japanese films worldwide, and one of Studio Ghibli’s most celebrated films to date. Spirited Away is also one of two films to win the Academy Awards’ Best Animated Feature as a non-English language film, with the other being The Boy and The Heron, also by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli.
