The latest FanFest has set the stage for the next decade of Final Fantasy XIV with the FFXIV Evercold expansion. From a massive overhaul of how we play our favorite jobs to a legendary collaboration with Neon Genesis Evangelion, here is everything we know about the upcoming 8.0 expansion, Evercold, and the concluding patches of the 7.x series.
Crossing the Rift
The trailer opens with the Warrior of Light (sporting the Reaper artifact gear) and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn standing before a shimmering, unstable portal. Guided by the mysterious new character Halmarut, the group steps through into the Fourth Reflection.
Unlike the vibrant tropical locales of Dawntrail, the Fourth is a world of stark, haunting beauty. The “Calamity of Ice” is immediately apparent—vast oceans are frozen mid-wave, and jagged ice crystals the size of skyscrapers pierce the sky.
Key Highlights from the Trailer
- The “Cat People” Reveal: A brief glimpse at the end of the teaser showcases a new race of feline-like NPCs (distinct from Miqo’te and Hrothgar) inhabiting a secluded, lanterns-lit mountain village.
- The Behemoths of the Mist: The trailer features several “Arcane Entities”—gigantic, shadowy behemoths roaming the frozen plains. It’s unclear if these are new world bosses, gods, or simply part of the local ecosystem.
- A Familiar Despair: Narratively, the Fourth’s struggle against the “Evercold” mirrors the First Reflection’s battle with the Flood of Light. The trailer emphasizes a sense of urgency; this world is on the brink of being permanently erased by ice.
- A New Way to Fight – Reborn vs. Evolved Modes: The most significant mechanical change coming in 8.0 is the introduction of dual playstyles for all 21 existing jobs. This system allows players to choose how they engage with their job’s rotation without sacrificing their ability to clear high-end content.
- Reborn Mode: This mode maintains the classic “ARR-style” feel and rotations players have mastered over the years. Updates and job balance for this mode will continue as usual.
- Evolved Mode: A completely fresh take on job rotations. While it may feature fewer inputs, Yoshi-P emphasized that this is not an “Easy Mode.” Think of it like the “Modern” vs. “Classic” controls in Street Fighter 6—a different way to express skill.
Evolved Mode is designed to be “a wee bit stronger,” but both modes are fully viable for all content. All jobs introduced in 8.0 and beyond (9.0, 10.0+) will only feature Evolved Mode.

- The Godless Realms Saga & Evercold: The narrative focus shifts to the Fourth Reflection, a world gripped by a “Calamity of Ice.” This marks the beginning of the Godless Realms Saga, which will be teased starting in Patch 7.5.
- New Exploration: Players will explore frozen wastes and new dungeons (the number of which will remain consistent with previous expansions). The level cap is also officially rising to 110.
Evercold is slated for a January 2027 release.
Collaborations & Special Content

Square Enix is pulling out all the stops for the new Alliance Raid and high-end trials:
- FFXIV x Evangelion: The new Alliance Raid series, “Ghosts of Desire,” is a crossover with Neon Genesis Evangelion. It is being developed by Square Enix under the direct supervision of Studio khara.
- Kefka Returns: For the upcoming “Dancing Mad (Ultimate)” raid in Patch 7.51, legendary designer Tetsuya Nomura has stepped in to design the specific look for Kefka and oversee the dialogue.
- Beastmaster: The new limited job is scheduled for release in Patch 7.56.
Technical Updates
The PS4 “Two-Year Warning”
While 8.0 will still run on the PlayStation 4, the team has admitted they are hitting the console’s data storage limits. “Even with cooperation from Sony’s engineers, we are reaching the limit. Patch 8.0 through 8.3 will be okay, but please consider upgrading to a PS5 within the next two years,” shared Naoki Yoshida.
The Free Trial Expands

The “critically acclaimed” meme grows even larger. With the launch of Evercold, the Free Trial will be expanded once again to include the Shadowbringers expansion, allowing players to play up to level 80 for free.
Nintendo Switch 2 Release

During the keynote, Yoshi-P revealed that after “many months of discussion with Nintendo,” the critically acclaimed MMORPG will officially launch on the new hardware in August 2026. Here are the key details regarding the port:
Launch & Early Access
- Release Date: August 2026.
- Early Access: Switch 2 players will get a full month of early access starting in July 2026.
- Free Period: During the early access month, the game will be completely free to play—no game purchase or monthly subscription will be required during this window.
Subscription Model & Requirements
- No Nintendo Switch Online Needed: On the bright side, you will not need a Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) membership to play the game, similar to how PlayStation players do not need PS Plus.
- The “Dual Subscription” Caveat: In a surprising move, Yoshi-P explained that the Switch 2 version will require its own separate subscription fee if you want to play on that platform. If you already play on PC or PlayStation and want to add the Switch 2 to your repertoire, you will unfortunately need to maintain two separate subscriptions.
