New Gameplay Details For ‘Borderlands 4’ Revealed At Borderlands FanFest 2025

The Borderlands FanFest on 21 June just wrapped up with some big announcements coming from GearBox for Borderlands 4. Fans who wished to try the game before the full release in September could play 30 minutes of the game, and also got to catch a new story trailer which premiered during the event.

During the event, GearBox CEO Randy Pitchford announced that Borderlands 4 will see a total increase in variations in how players can build their vault-hunters with there being “more skills per characters than in Borderlands 2 and 3 added together”.

This is surprising as a lot of variety was already available in all the previous games, even seeing a fourth skill-tree being added to Borderlands 3. According to Pitchford, the decision to do so is to enable the players to play different roles whilst bringing in the same vault-hunter, shifting from the tradition where certain roles and/or playstyle were tied to certain vault-hunters.

Some changes or additions include a grappling hook for faster and increased mobility and even fishing. That’s right folks, Borderlands 4 has fishing! Other changes include a combat radar to grant players more awareness on field. However, Pitchford also revealed that the game won’t be having the usual mini-map. How much will it affect gameplay? We’ll have to wait and play more to determine when the game releases.

All things said, Borderlands 4’s appearance at Fan-Fest appears to be a success with many fans attending and even exceeding the available time slots to play the game. Things are looking promising ahead of its official release!

Borderlands 4 is set to be fully released on 12th September 2025, and is now available for pre-order via Steam, Epic Games Store, Playstation and Xbox Series X|S.
