Got an hour to spare? Spilled! is a wholesome, cozy experience that can be completed in one sitting, and will leave you feeling relaxed and more in tune with nature by the end of it. The game is simple: Clean up ocean waste to earn coins, upgrade your boat with the coins you earn, and explore new areas.
Despite its one-hour duration, Spilled! does a lot with the time it has with you. There are a total of eight areas to move through, and different biomes ranging from hot deserts to cold arctics. In order to progress to new areas, you’ll need to clean at least 90% of the ocean waste in the current area, but you can always take your time to clean 100% for that sweet, sweet achievement. Over time, you can also upgrade your boat’s speed, wastage tank, and scooper to make cleaning easier.
As you progress through the game, you receive additional boat upgrades to help you deal with bigger oil spills and different kinds of ocean waste; like a water cannon that allows you to clean oil pollution on land, and a dredging claw that allows you to dredge barrels from underwater in exchange for coins.
The game loop is simple and repetitive, but that’s part of its charm. There are a handful of side quests that are completely optional to complete, such as the sixteen animal friends you can find trapped in oil spills, with adorable names like Bob and Peaches. Certain levels also contain mini fetch quests like returning a beach ball to another boat on the river. While they don’t amount to anything but extra coins and a Steam achievement, they do add charm to this tiny game.
Albeit simple in execution, the game has a lovely environmental message bolstered by beautiful pixel graphics and a soothing soundtrack. Being able to watch the muddy water turn crystal clear as you clean the environment is immensely satisfying, and the gameplay generally reminds me of PowerWash Simulator if it took place on a boat. The game also donates $0.10 to Whale and Dolphin Conservation for each copy sold on Steam, which is just an added bonus.
Still, there are a few things to watch out for. The tank controls are going to be hit or miss with some players, especially since there’s no option to swap to free controls. The fixed isometric perspective also makes using the dredging tool, which requires a fair amount of precision, more challenging than it should be. However, with its RM16.50 price tag and short duration, these problems are fairly easy to power through.
