AnimeJapan, one of the biggest anime events in the world, returned to Tokyo Big Sight from March 22 to 23. The convention is the premier event for the Japanese animation industry, and the go-to place for fans to get the biggest anime announcements, as well as a preview of upcoming series and movies.
Here’s five of the biggest highlights from this year’s event:
1. My Hero Academia Reveals Final Season Trailer
TOHO Animation revealed a new trailer and key visual for the eighth and final season of My Hero Academia, set to be released this October. The final season will adapt the last two arcs of the manga, the Final War arc and the Epilogue arc, which consist of chapters 398 to 431.
Much of the series’ previous staff will be returning for the final season, including chief director Kenji Nagasaki, director Naomi Nakayama, script supervisor Yosuke Kuroda, character designers Yoshihiko Umakoshi and Hitomi Odashima, as well as composer Yuki Hayashi. Studio Bones will once again handle animation production.
2. Kaiju No. 8 Shows Off Second Season Trailer
Season 2 of Kaiju No. 8 was announced for July 2025, along with a new trailer showing off fan-favourite character Gen Narumi. Much of the series’ original staff will also return for the second season, including directors Shigeyuki Miya and Tomomi Kamiya, script and series compositor Ichiro Okouchi, and composer Yuta Bando.
Kaiju No.8: Mission Recon, a film compiling episodes of Season 1 and a special episode titled ‘Hoshina’s Day Off’, was also announced for an April 2025 premiere date.
3. The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity Announces July Premiere
The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity, an anime series based on the manga by Saka Mikami, showed off a new promotional video and some new series details. The show stars Yoshinori Nakayama in his first leading role as protagonist Rintaro Tsumigi, opposite Honoka Inoue (Honeyberry from Arknights) as Kaoroko Waguri.
The series is set to premiere this July, directed by Miyuki Kuroki, with Satoshi Yamaguchi as assistant director, and writing and script supervision by Rino Yamazaki. Animation production will be handled by CloverWorks.
4.Twisted Wonderland Reveals First Series Trailer
Twisted Wonderland, an anime adaptation of a popular mobile game of the same name, showed off a new trailer for the series’ first season, Episode of Heartslabyul. Much of the game’s voice cast will reprise their original roles, including Natsuki Hanae as Riddle Rosehearts, Seiichirō Yamashita as Ace Trappola and Chiaki Kobayashi as Deuce Spade.
The anime will air exclusively on Disney+ this October, and will adapt the mobile game’s accompanying manga series Episode of Heartslabyul, Episode of Savanaclaw, and Episode of Octavinelle.
5. Rurouni Kenshin Anime Confirms Third Season
Aniplex announced a third season for its reboot of the Rurouni Kenshin anime, though no new details were revealed beyond that. The series is a new adaptation of the manga by Nobuhiro Watsuki, which began airing in July 2023. Its second season, Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Disturbance, aired last October.
