Half a decade after the airing of its last season, fans are rejoicing over the recent announcement of A Certain Scientific Railgun (Toaru Kagaku no Railgun) Season 4, made during publisher Dengeki Bunko’s New Year Super Appreciation Winter Festival Online 2025 livestream. Whilst no further details were shown, it was confirmed that the original voice actresses of the core cast would reprise their roles in the new season.
A teaser trailer was also released, featuring Railgun’s original Season 1 opening “Only My Railgun” by fripSide, which sparked a sense of nostalgia in many old fans’ hearts. Fans expressed their wishes to see fripSide return for the Season 4 opening as well, given that fripSide had performed all seven of the anime openings for the past three seasons of Railgun. However, some fans also lamented over the departure of Yoshino Nanjo from fripSide in 2022, further adding to the uncertainty of the group returning for the Season 4 opening.
A Certain Scientific Railgun is based on a light novel spinoff from the series A Certain Magical Index (Toaru Majutsu no Index). Despite starting out as a spinoff set in the Toaru universe, the Railgun series and its female lead Misaka Mikoto have cultivated a huge fanbase over the last decade, becoming an immensely popular series in its own right.
The series follows the Level 5 Esper Misaka Mikoto, commonly nicknamed Railgun, as she deals with strange incidents and crimes occurring around Academic City that she and her friends keep finding themselves involved in.
Alongside the announcement of Railgun Season 4, an anime adaptation of A Certain Dark Side ITEM (Toaru Anbu no ITEM), another spinoff series focusing on the ITEM group from the Toaru universe, was also unveiled. Similar to the Railgun Season 4 teaser trailer, this trailer also confirmed that the original voice actresses of the core cast would reprise their roles in this spinoff series.
