TOHO animation has officially confirmed a third television season and an original theatrical film for its wildly popular series, The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto). The announcements were made via a special “2nd Anniversary Commemorative Trailer” released this past Wednesday.
The third season of the television anime is set to follow a split-cour schedule, with the first cour premiering in October 2026 and the second cour following in April 2027. An original anime film is also slated to open in December 2026, featuring a brand-new story penned by the original novel series’ author, Natsu Hyūga.
The Apothecary Diaries tells the tale of Maomao, an unassuming young woman with a sharp mind and extensive knowledge of medicine, raised by her apothecary father. After being kidnapped and sold into service in the hougong (the rear palace) of an emperor, her quiet life changes as she is transformed into the lady-in-waiting to the Emperor’s favorite consort.
The series, which began airing in 2023, quickly became a hit sensation across the globe. Reflecting on this success, it was also announced that an exhibition dedicated to The Apothecary Diaries is preparing to tour across Asia. Starting in Hong Kong this November, the exhibition is set continue its journey to cities across mainland China, Taipei, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and other areas.
