The Japan Foundation and Okinawa Prefecture Singapore Office, in collaboration with Zepp Kuala Lumpur, will present a special commemorative concert in Malaysia for the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and Malaysia in January 2027.
The event will feature acclaimed Okinawan singers Tamashiro Chiharu and Inamine Yukino, alongside Malaysian artists Dabra Sia and Tuni Sundatang, as well as the Universiti Teknologi MARA Traditional Performing Group, presenting a unique cross-cultural collaboration.
Drawing inspiration from the maritime exchanges between the Ryukyu Kingdom and the Malacca Sultanate in the 15th century, this concert will bring together artists from Japan and Malaysia to create new connections through music and further deepen cultural exchange between the two countries.
Visitors will also be able to experience a special Okinawa tourism promotion presented by the Okinawa Prefecture Singapore Office, highlighting the attractions of Okinawa alongside the evening’s cultural exchange through music.
Beyond the main Kuala Lumpur concert, Inamine Yukino, Tuni Sundatang, and Dabra Sia will also perform additional mini showcases to audiences in Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. By combining both popular and traditional music, the programme aims to foster greater appreciation and understanding of the cultures of both countries among diverse audiences.
This project is being implemented as part of the Partnership to Co-create a Future with the Next Generation: WA Project 2.0, a comprehensive people-to-people exchange initiative designed to promote youth exchange and human resource development between Japan and ASEAN.
Ticket sales information and additional programme details will be announced at a later date through the organisers’ official channels.
