Toge Productions has released The Meritocracy Update for co-op roguelite Whisper Mountain Outbreak, marking the game’s biggest update since launch. The update is also available through the game’s Friend’s Pass.
The update expands the game’s roguelite progression with a new meta progression system, allowing players to complete challenges, earn experience, level up characters, and unlock additional loadout options that carry across future runs.
New Meta Progression and Loadouts
Players can now complete Task Records, a series of challenges that reward additional content and progression bonuses for future runs.
The update also introduces an XP system, which converts scores earned during runs into experience. Certain Task Records can provide additional XP, with each level-up awarding Merit Points.
These Merit Points can be spent on Loadout perks, allowing players to customise each run with additional starting items and bonuses.
New Scenarios and Research Facility

The game’s scenario structure has also been updated to feature two scenarios, each offering a self-contained journey across smaller maps before culminating in a larger final map.
- In “The Scroll of Evil,” players search for an ancient scroll belonging to a legendary shamaness said to have the power to control the dead.
- The second scenario, “Flesh in the Machine,” tasks players with tracing the source of flesh-like roots contaminating the city.
The update also adds a new Research Facility map. Funded by the same energy and mining corporation responsible for starting the calamity, the facility introduces a new reflective ray puzzle. Players must redirect laser beams through a series of reflectors to hit their targets and unlock the path forward.
New Machete Weapon
Players can also add the Machete to their arsenal. The fast melee weapon is designed for rapid attacks but cannot knock enemies back.
Fully charging an attack and releasing it allows players to perform two quick slashes in succession, providing a new option for close-range combat.
The Meritocracy Update is available now for Whisper Mountain Outbreak on PC, with the new features also accessible through the Friend’s Pass.
