Sony Pictures Entertainment’s new live-action Resident Evil reboot has opened at No. 1 at the box office in both Singapore and Malaysia, according to Cinema Online Singapore. The film opened in Malaysia on September 16, and Singapore on September 17.
The reboot stars Austin Abrams as lead character Bryan, alongside Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser. Zach Cregger, known for Barbarian and Weapons, directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten.
The new movie marks the eighth live-action film in the Resident Evil franchise. The first six live-action Resident Evil films were released between 2002 and 2017 and starred Milla Jovovich. The franchise was rebooted in 2021 with Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.
On the gaming side, Resident Evil Requiem launched on February 27 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The game has surpassed 6 million units in worldwide cumulative sales, making it the fastest title in the franchise to reach that milestone.
