Spellbinder 2026 Brings Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons Together for a Four-Day Celebration of Play

The first-of-its-kind festival-scale experience aims to introduce a new generation of Malaysians to two of the world’s most influential tabletop games.

This October, some of the world’s most iconic tabletop games will come together in Kuala Lumpur as Spellbinder: A Magical Festival takes place from 1 to 4 October 2026 at LaLaport BBCC. The event is co-organized by Animart Hobby Creatives Sdn. Bhd. in partnership with homegrown game stores Quantum Nexus Kuala Lumpur, Owlbear Eyrie Ipoh, Cardcade Tabletop, and Bonfire Hobby Shop, and supported by community groups Nightshade Tavern, The Northern Collectors’ Hub, Mana Coven and many more.

Bringing together Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons, two franchises that have shaped modern tabletop gaming for generations, Spellbinder 2026 is designed as a celebration of play, creativity and community, all while giving newcomers an opportunity to experience these games for themselves.

Created in 1993, Magic: The Gathering (MTG) is widely recognised as the world’s first trading card game. Combining strategy, deck-building and fantasy storytelling, the game has grown into a global phenomenon with more than 50 million players to date and a presence in more than 150 countries.

Meanwhile, Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) pioneered the tabletop role-playing game when it was first published in 1974. Rather than simply competing to win, players create characters, explore imaginary worlds and collaboratively tell stories together. The game has likewise grown into a cultural phenomenon with more than 50 million fans globally.

Together, these two franchises represent more than 50 years of tabletop gaming history — and Spellbinder aims to bring that legacy to a new audience in Malaysia.

A Festival Built Around Playing

At the heart of Spellbinder is a simple idea: games are meant to be played.

As card collecting and trading have grown into major parts of the wider hobby, Spellbinder aims to put the original purpose of these games back in the spotlight: getting people around a table, learning the rules, meeting others and playing together.

This play-first approach is particularly important for newcomers who may have encountered MTG or D&D from the outside but never had the opportunity to actually sit down and try them.

Spellbinder will therefore feature learn-to-play sessions, casual gaming spaces, tournaments, hosted D&D adventures, board games and community activities, creating multiple entry points for visitors regardless of their previous experience.

For MTG, this means visitors can experience the game beyond the cards themselves, discovering a strategic game that can be played casually with friends or competitively at tournament level; while for D&D, visitors can step into the role of a fantasy character and experience collaborative storytelling, guided by experienced game masters.

“What we aim to achieve with Spellbinder 2026 is to connect these games with such a historical past with the present generation of gamers,” says a spokesperson from Quantum Nexus Kuala Lumpur. “As we commonly say in Quantum Nexus, the ‘Magic’ is in the gathering of people from various backgrounds, nationalities and professions; a sort of unity in diversity.”

The intention is to make Spellbinder a place where an experienced player can find a serious game, while someone who has never played before can walk in, learn the basics and discover why millions of people around the world have made these games part of their lives.

Highlander 10K: The Main Event

The centrepiece of Spellbinder 2026 will be Highlander 10K, a major Magic: The Gathering tournament aimed at the game’s hugely popular Commander community.

Co-hosted by Animart Hobby Creatives Sdn. Bhd., Quantum Nexus Kuala Lumpur and Owlbear Eyrie Ipoh, the tournament offers players a chance to win sought-after products from Magic: The Gathering’s Universes Beyond collection, including a Final Fantasy Chocobo Bundle, Marvel Super Heroes Bundles, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Bundles.

The event will welcome both seasoned Commander players and casual players, bringing the community together for a major tournament experience at Spellbinder 2026. Registration is now open on https://topdeck.gg/event/quantum-nexus-highlander-10k.

A Celebration of Tabletop Culture

Beyond its games and tournaments, Spellbinder will explore the wider culture that has grown around tabletop gaming.

A special exhibition will showcase Magic: The Gathering cards, Warhammer miniatures and other tabletop memorabilia, offering visitors an opportunity to discover the artwork, craftsmanship, history and collecting culture behind some of the hobby’s most recognisable games.

The festival will also feature a miniature painting workshop, hosted D&D one-shot sessions for newcomers, tabletop accessories and other community-led activities.

Across the four-day festival, visitors can also expect:

  • Magic: The Gathering Learn-to-Play sessions
  • MTG casual play areas
  • Board game play areas
  • Draft sessions
  • D&D one-shot adventures
  • Competitive tournaments
  • Student activities
  • Stamp Rally activities
  • Special exhibitions and memorabilia
  • Community-driven tabletop activities

An Invitation to Discover the World of Tabletop Gaming

For decades, Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons have given generations of players a reason to gather around a table and create experiences together.

Spellbinder 2026 seeks to bring that spirit to a wider Malaysian audience, introducing newcomers to two of the most influential games in tabletop history while giving established communities a space to play, compete and connect.

Taking place from 1 to 4 October 2026 at LaLaport BBCC, Spellbinder: A Magical Festival welcomes players, families, hobbyists, collectors and the simply curious for four days of games, stories and community.
