‘The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t A Guy At All’ Anime Gets Opening Song From Nirvana

At Anime Expo 2026, Crunchyroll unveiled a new teaser trailer for The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t A Guy At All, an anime adaptation of the popular manga series by Sumiko Arai. The release was accompanied by new commemorative artwork from Arai (left) and series director Masashi Ishihama (right).

It was also revealed that the 1991 song “Breed” by Nirvana will serve as the anime’s opening. Crunchyroll released a short interview clip featuring Dave Grohl, founder of the Foo Fighters and former drummer for Nirvana, in which Grohl praised the series, saying “Kurt (Cobain) would’ve loved this. It seems like the same aesthetic, message, and the vibe, you know?”

Fans can likely expect to see more Western rock and grunge music appearing throughout the series, as Grohl was also shown a list of songs from the anime, the majority of which he recognised.

The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t A Guy At All follows Aya, a high school student who falls in love with a mysterious employee at her local CD shop – though unbeknownst to her, “he” is actually her female classmate, Mitsuki. As the two grow closer at school, Mitsuki begins to contemplate revealing her identity to Aya.

The anime adaptation will be produced by CloverWorks, with Masashi Ishihama (From the New World, Garakowa -Restore the World-, Horimiya) serving as director. Akari Kitō will voice Aya, opposite Mariya Ise as Mitsuki.
