Animation giants Sunrise and SHAFT have officially announced their first-ever anime collaboration. The two studios have launched a dedicated X (formerly Twitter) account, “Sunrise x SHAFT New Anime,” featuring a countdown campaign leading up to the project’s full reveal.
The account’s first teaser video showcased a series of color scripts, offering fans an early glimpse into the visual atmosphere and world of the upcoming anime.
Sunrise is widely recognized for iconic franchises such as Mobile Suit Gundam, Love Live!, and Code Geass. The studio is also preparing for its 50th anniversary celebrations in 2027, marking five decades since the debut of Muteki Chōjin Zambot 3. As part of the festivities, Sunrise has launched several projects, including a collection of original 3DCG animated short films developed alongside other animation studios.
Their collaborator SHAFT has earned a reputation for its distinctive visual storytelling, heavily influenced by directors such as Akiyuki Shinbo. The studio is best known for acclaimed titles including Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Monogatari, and March Comes in Like a Lion. SHAFT is also currently working on the television anime adaptation of Just Like Mona Lisa.
