The Sword Art Online franchise is set to recieve a brand-new original theatrical film, with further details scheduled to be released in July. The news was announced during “Yuna First Live”, a series-inspired concert which took place on April 29, as well as via a statement on the official Sword Art Online X account.
The Sword Art Online anime and manga series adapts a series of light novels created by author Reki Kawahara, which follow Kirito, a young man who finds himself trapped within a virtual reality game. Kirito and the game’s 10,000 players are thus forced to survive a high-stakes adventure, where dying in the game means dying in real life.
The series was first adapted into an anime in 2012, followed by several theatrical film releases starting from 2017. A new action-adventure game inspired by the series, Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad, is scheduled to be released on July 10, 2026.
