Starting today, Hiromu Arakawa’s seminal manga series Fullmetal Alchemist will be made available on Webtoon’s English-language platform. The series will be depicted in full colour for the first time, with a new layout to suit Webtoon’s vertical scroll format.
First serialized in Square Enix’s Monthly Shõnen Gangan magazine from 2001 to 2010, the Fullmetal Alchemist manga has been adapted into two anime series, films, light novels, video games, and more. It tells the story of Edward and Alphonse Elric, a pair of alchemist brothers who try to resurrect their dead mother through the forbidden act of human transmutation.
However, the transmutation fails, causing Edward to lose his leg, and Alphonse to lose his life in the process. To save him, Edward sacrifices his arm to transmute his brother’s soul, attaching it to a suit of armor. Now, the brothers set out on a long journey to reclaim their bodies.
“Fullmetal Alchemist is the kind of story that stays with you for life—whether you’ve read the original manga, watched the anime, or found it through its passionate global fandom,” said Yongsoo Kim, Head of Global Webtoon at Webtoon Entertainment.
“Bringing this iconic series to Webtoon audiences gives both longtime fans and first-timers a new way to enjoy this story. It’s emotional, it’s intense, and now it’s easier than ever to fall in love with it all over again.”
