Devil May Cry Anime Drops New Trailer With 2000s Nu Metal, Epic Action, and a Surprising Casting Change

Netflix’s upcoming Devil May Cry anime is shaping up to be a demon-slaying, sword-swinging thrill ride—and as a massive fan of the franchise, it’s everything I could have hoped for (well, almost). With a fresh trailer dropping ahead of its April 3, 2025 premiere, the series promises over-the-top action, edgy early 2000s vibes, and a star-studded voice cast.

But not everything is perfect—while the trailer brings the hype, it also delivers a bittersweet twist: Dan Southworth will not be reprising his iconic role as Vergil. As a fan, it’s disappointing to lose that signature voice, but the explosive animation still has me counting down the days.

Dante’s World, Dante’s Rules

The latest trailer leans hard into what makes Devil May Cry legendary—stylish combat, cocky one-liners, and sibling rivalry. Dante, voiced by the ever-talented Johnny Yong Bosch (famous for playing Nero in Devil May Cry 4 and Ichigo Kurosaki in Bleach), is in prime form as he mows down demons and heavily armed militias alike.

From parkouring off a free-falling airplane to parrying missiles with his sword, Dante’s swagger is fully intact. And if that’s not enough, the trailer teases the inevitable clash with his twin brother, Vergil. Fans of Devil May Cry 3 will immediately recognize the heavy inspiration—the anime is clearly drawing from Dante’s younger, brasher days as a demon hunter.

Adding to the early 2000s nostalgia is the soundtrack. Following the jaw-dropping reveal that the anime’s opening theme features Limp Bizkit’s “Rollin’,” the new trailer cranks the energy to eleven with Papa Roach’s classic “Last Resort.” It’s the perfect choice for the show’s chaotic, devil-may-care attitude. With these music choices, I wouldn’t be surprised (or disappointed) if tracks from Slipknot or Powerman 5000 make an appearance next.

Star-Studded Voice Cast (With One Big Absence)

The voice cast is stacked with talent from anime and pop culture icons. Here’s who’s bringing the beloved characters to life:

  • Dante – Johnny Yong Bosch (Bleach, Devil May Cry 4)
  • Lady – Scout Taylor-Compton (Halloween, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre)
  • White Rabbit – Hoon Lee (Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
  • Enzo – Chris Coppola (Beowulf)
  • VP Baines – The late Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series)

Bosch’s casting as Dante brings a fascinating twist—he previously voiced Nero, who is essentially a younger version of Dante with a cursed demon arm. While it’s exciting to hear Bosch take on the lead role, the absence of Dan Southworth as Vergil is a tough pill to swallow. Southworth’s cold, calculating performance has been a defining part of the character’s identity since Devil May Cry 3. For long-time fans, his absence leaves a noticeable void.

Faithful to the Devil May Cry Legacy

The anime’s showrunner, Adi Shankar (Castlevania), has made it clear that the series will be a love letter to the Devil May Cry universe. Not only does the show draw from the mainline games, but it also taps into Capcom’s underappreciated manga. One exciting inclusion is White Rabbit, a villain straight from the manga lore. Shankar has also hinted at even more iconic allies and rivals joining the fray.

Behind the animation is the powerhouse Studio Mir, known for their work on Harley Quinn, X-Men ‘97, and My Adventures with Superman. Judging by the trailer’s fluid fight sequences and eye-popping visual style, Devil May Cry fans are in for a visual feast.

Will It Deliver? Fans Hope So.

With the anime set to drop on April 3, the big question remains: can it sustain the hype long enough for future seasons? There’s so much potential left to explore—especially if the show eventually brings in Nero (though that might be awkward with Bosch already voicing Dante). And let’s be honest, I’m still holding out hope for a killer Linkin Park track to make the soundtrack.

Despite the disappointment of losing Dan Southworth’s voice for Vergil, there’s no denying that Devil May Cry on Netflix looks like a devilishly good time. Stylish action, deep lore, and a head-banging soundtrack? Count me in.
