Recommended Slice of Life Comics from WEBTOON

Out of manga to read and searching endlessly for an alternative? Well, look no further! Introducing to you, LINE WEBTOON – a global digital comics service platform where you can read various comics for FREE on both the web and mobile while supporting the artists. With over 200 free online comics for you to discover, you’ll definitely not be bored for a while.

Personally, I discovered WEBTOON around a month ago and till this day, I still have an endless list of comics from varying genres on my to-read list, ranging from action, fantasy, comedy and so on. I’ll be recommending my favourite comics from WEBTOON by genre and let’s start off this series with my all-time favourite: the slice of life genre!

1. Giant Nerd Boyfriend

Author: fishball

“A height difference of 30cm and above might seem adorable to some, but it usually causes a lot of minor inconveniences. Follow Fishball as she navigates the Malaysian life with her 199cm-tall, geeky boyfriend.”

Being extremely relatable and humorous, it is no wonder that The Giant Nerd Boyfriend is constantly in the top ranks of popular webtoons. This is usually the first series that I introduce to friends so that I can drag them into webtoon hell with me (lol). In all seriousness though, this is the best series to read when you’re on the go as each episode is simple and short. She made an appearance at Comic Fiesta (Malaysia) this weekend and I hope that you managed to meet her if you’re a fan! (I did!!)

2. A Budgie’s Life

Author: Muffin Girl

“When it comes to birds we think they are just fluttering little creatures who have no contact with humans whatsoever. But bird owners know that’s not true! Like pet dogs and cats, birds have a personality of their own.”

Have you ever read a webtoon that is all about birds? Well, here’s your chance! A Budgie’s Life depicts the author’s daily life with her pet birds – in this case, mostly budgies. If you’ve ever thought of getting a bird as a pet, this comic will definitely help you as it is also very informational on what you should and shouldn’t do as a pet bird owner. What I admire about the author is her creativity as she tries to make episodes more unique for her readers, for example, by incorporating a fantasy/fairytale theme and utilising her budgies as characters or even doing a human version comic of her pet birds.

3. Roar Street Journal

Source: bonniepangart.com

Author: Bonnie Pang

“Created and run by animals, Roar Street Journal provides a selection of stories and comics to bring a smile to your everyday life.”

Roar Street Journal has personally got to be the most heartwarming comic in Line WEBTOON. Definitely one of the most underrated comic within the featured page, the author constantly comes up with various ideas to showcase to her readers which I find extremely amazing as a fan. Bonnie manages to impart life lessons (sometimes little things) through her characters in a very heartwarming way and is always doing her best to interact with her fans. Her characters are really well-developed with each of them having their own unique personality. Roar Street Journal definitely deserves more recognition within the WEBTOON community!

4. Just For Kicks

Source: imgrum.org

Author: Josie Fox

“A lighthearted comic about an amateur university Taekwondo club! Join the team as they train, sweat, eat, & laugh their way through daily life.”

If you’ve ever learnt a martial art or still learning, this is definitely the comic that you can relate to. Personally, I’ve only done a little bit of martial arts so it wasn’t very relatable to me but I still enjoy reading and learning what a taekwondo club is like. As the synopsis says, it is a very light-hearted comic with enjoyable characters.

5. Daily Life of A Gay Couple

Source: webtoons.com

Author: Inkollo

“We are a gay couple living in Nantes, France. This is our story.”

The reason why I’m recommending this comic is not just because they’re a gay couple (that’s a bonus!), but also the fact that the author doesn’t sugarcoat his love life and only shows the happy side of his relationship to his readers. We’re all human after all and everyone has issues that they have to overcome. Of course most of the time, the short comic strips are humorous and light-hearted, but I’m glad that the author isn’t afraid of sharing with readers that ‘Yeah, we do have our issues and we try to work around it’, and that also makes us feel more connected with the author.

And that’s it for my recommendations for webtoons in the slice of life genre! Most slice of life comics tend to be shorter than most, and light-hearted. Trying out these webtoons will definitely make your daily commute a whole lot more entertaining and I hope that you’ll enjoy reading these comics.

If you’ve not downloaded LINE WEBTOON yet, what are you waiting for?? It’s free and available on both the IOS and Android platform! If we’ve missed out on any of your favourite slice of life comics, let us know in the comments below!
