The beloved horror franchise Higurashi: When They Cry is officially returning with a brand-new television anime, announced during the series’ 20th anniversary livestream event. Alongside the reveal, a teaser visual featuring the tagline “Welcome back, everyone” was released, signaling a new chapter for the long-running franchise.
Originally created by 07th Expansion and writer Ryukishi07, Higurashi: When They Cry began as a visual novel in 2002. Set in a seemingly peaceful rural village, the story follows a series of mysterious murders and unsettling events linked to the community’s annual festival.
The franchise has received multiple anime adaptations over the years, beginning with the 2006 television series and its sequel, Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai, in 2007. More recently, the story was revisited through Higurashi: When They Cry – GOU in 2020 and Higurashi: When They Cry – SOTSU in 2021.
The newly announced anime will once again be produced by Studio DEEN, with the main cast reprising their iconic roles. Returning voice actors include Soichiro Hoshi as Keiichi Maebara, Mai Nakahara as Rena Ryugu, Satsuki Yukino as both Mion and Shion Sonozaki, Mika Kanai as Satoko Hojo, and Yukari Tamura as Rika Furude.
