‘Escape the Baby Alarm’, A Game About Early Parenthood, Launches Expanded Steam Demo

Danish developer Julie Normann Bjørnskov has released an expanded demo of Escape the Baby Alarm, ahead of Steam Next Fest running June 15 to 22. The game is a hand-drawn puzzle adventure where the chaos, exhaustion, and small victories of early parenthood become surreal escape room puzzles, treating a subject most games never go near.

“I was so full of emotions after maternity leave. There was the lack of sleep, the chaos I found myself in, and a burning desire to be creative again and express myself. But the only things in my head were bedtimes, diaper changes, confusion, and doing everything I could to make sure my children were thriving,” said Julie Normann Bjørnskov.

“There wasn’t any space left… but maybe that wasn’t a problem. Maybe I could turn it into something rarely seen in video games: an honest game about being a parent, where I process everything my mind is already full of and turn it into a game. That’s what Escape the Baby Alarm is meant to be: a tribute to parents, and a celebration of the hard work that goes into raising a whole new generation of amazing little humans.”

The puzzles are drawn from real life, which is what makes them strange. Shoes turn up in the fridge. A bathroom counter becomes an obstacle course between the sunscreen and the toothbrush. A box of chocolates gets smashed open in exhaustion-fuelled frustration.

Some rooms ask players to navigate the flood of contradictory advice that descends on every new parent, each tip technically correct, none of them quite fitting together. The game is calm throughout, with no points or time pressure, a deliberate choice because the subject brings up a lot and players should be able to move through it at their own pace.

That strangeness is intentional. Julie draws on magical realism as her creative frame, treating the sleepless blur of early parenthood as the perfect setting for an escape room, a state where the real world and the subconscious blur into each other, and nothing is quite as it should be.

At the centre of the game is a question most new parents know well: am I doing this right? The story builds through the chaos and tenderness of early parenthood toward a confrontation with the “Am I a Good Mother?” monster waiting at the heart of it.

A new trailer for Escape the Baby Alarm is available now, hinting at the emotional range of early parenthood, from the chaos of a sleepless morning to the fears that come with it.
