Kyoto Animation Announce Upcoming Film Project, ‘Credits Roll Into The Sea’

Kyoto Animation is set to produce an animated film adaptation of Credits Roll Into The Sea, a manga series written and illustrated by John Tarachine. The film is scheduled for a 2027 release, with Taichi Ishidate (Violet Evergarden: The Movie) to serve as director.

Credits Roll Into the Sea follows Umiko Chino, a 65-year-old woman in mourning for her late husband. Remembering how she and her husband used to watch movies together, Umiko visits a movie theater for the first time in years, where she meets Kai, a young film student. Encouraged by Kai’s words, Umiko realises she wants to pursue filmmaking as well.

The manga series was first serialized in Akita Shoten’s Monthly Mystery Bonita from 2020 to 2025, where it earned widespread critical acclaim. The series has been nominated for the Manga Taisho awards and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, and was ranked first on Kono Manga ga Sugoi!’s 2022 list of the best manga for female readers.
