‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ Is Now Netflix’s Fourth Most-Viewed Original Film

Sony Pictures’ animated film K-Pop Demon Hunters is now the No. 4 most-watched original film on Netflix, having achieved a whopping 158  million views since its release on June 20. The film has already smashed the record for being Netflix’s most-watched original animated film, and now trails only live-action movies Red Notice (230mil), Carry‑On (172 mil), and Don’t Look Up (171 mil).

This achievement is especially notable as the film only began to gain momentum in the weeks following its release. Where other Netflix releases tend to peak shortly after release, K-Pop Demon Hunters only continued to grow in popularity, starting at 9.2 million views, and growing to 82 million views by mid-July, becoming Netflix’s first film to reach its maximum viewership in its fifth week.

The film’s soundtrack has proven to be just as popular as the film, with the song “Golden” in particular now standing at No.2 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it’s poised to challenge Chappell Roan’s “The Subway” and Alex Warren’s “Ordinary” for No. 1. Its influence has even spread to real-life K-Pop groups, with many artists performing short covers and full-on performances of songs from the film.

Created by directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, K-Pop Demon Hunters follows a girl group named Huntr/x, who must balance their idol duties with their secret lives as demon hunters. According to The Wrap, Netflix is currently planning two sequels, a short film, and even a stage musical inspired by the surprise hit.
