Last December, following the success of ‘Black Panther’, Marvel Studios announced that it would be introducing a new face to its cinematic universe – the master martial artist “Shang-Chi” as the first Asian protagonist in a Marvel superhero film.
Back then, the studio had already signed on Asian-American screenwriter Dave Callaham (of ‘The Expendables’ and ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ fame) to pen the screenplay. The next key component they were missing was a director – and now, they have it.
Destin Daniel Cretton is most known for his work on ‘Short Term 12’, ‘The Glass Castle’, and other films in the drama genre. Coincidentally, he already has his fair share of experience working with Marvel stars. Cretton is currently directing ‘Just Mercy, which stars none other than Brie Larson (from ‘Captain Marvel’) and Michael B. Jordan (from ‘Black Panther’).
Interestingly enough, this is also his third time directing Larson having previous worked with her on ‘The Glass Castle’ and ‘Short Term 12′, which was the actress’ first lead role in a film.
While “Shang-Chi” seems to be a significant departure in tone and style from his previous work, Cretton is expected to shine a unique perspective on the character, having grown up in an Asian-American environment himself.
If you are not familiar with the character, Shang-Chi is a martial arts master who first appeared in Marvel comic books in the 1970s. He is extraordinary at both armed and unarmed combat, showing mastery of multiple martial arts styles and weaponry across the years. He is also one of the few non-superhuman characters in the universe to have beaten numerous superhumans in combat.
