Indie Jam Sessions June Edition Explores Breaking Stereotypes in the Games Industry

This June 20th, the latest edition of Indie Jam Sessions tackles the topic of stereotypes in the games industry and how they continue to shape the experiences of developers, players, and communities today. Indie Jam Sessions is a monthly game development workshop and playtesting series presented by THE MAGIC RAIN and Make With Friends.

This month’s session will feature a panel discussion titled “Breaking Stereotypes in the Games Industry”, featuring Nissie Arcega of Women in Games Asia and Julieanne Tabilog of ECPAT International, moderated by Sophie Azlan of OutCrowd MY.

Nissie Arcega is a publishing producer, community organizer, and game maker who is passionate about supporting indie developers across Southeast Asia. Through mentorship programs, game jams, and publishing initiatives, she helps creators share their games with audiences around the world. She is currently building the publishing arm of Philippine game studio Monstronauts and supports indie developers through Goldpact Goblins.

Joining her is Julieanne Tabilog, a digital communications specialist whose work focuses on gender and child rights. Over the past five years, she has advocated for child safety and challenged harmful gender norms in gaming spaces. Outside of work, she enjoys FPS games, online word puzzles, and speedrunning Burger Shop.

Together, the panel will explore how internalised biases and external factors affect the games industry at large, how the industry has evolved and adapted over the years, and where it may be headed in the future.
