The Bon Odori Festival is one of Malaysia’s most well-known Japanese cultural festivals. Though it has its roots in the Japanese tradition of Obon, a day in which attendees traditionally honour their deceased ancestors, the Malaysian celebration is typically a fun get-together where friends and family can gather to enjoy food and performances.
While many Bon Odori events are celebrated across Malaysia throughout the summer months, the biggest and most well-known Bon Odori is organised by the Japan Club of Kuala Lumpur, who have held the event for over 49 years with the goal of strengthening ties between Malaysia and Japan.
Though the Japan Club’s event has taken place at the Shah Alam Panasonic Sports Complex for over a decade, this year’s Bon Odori has found a new home at the Sunway City Open Carpark, located opposite to Sunway Resort. It has also been expanded to a two-day event, now taking place from July 12 to 13.
