Inside Scoop with SAIDA – AniManGaki 2019

We’ve had the privilege of interviewing SAIDA during AniManGaki 2019, the well-known cosplayer who is based in South Korea that makes her own costumes. She is mostly well-known for her Disney Princess cosplays, and has her own YouTube channel where she vlogs about her costume creations.

This interview is mixed between a group interview that was conducted along with our exclusive interview with SAIDA. So, here’s all the need-to-know and insider information on what’s what with SAIDA.

Q: First question, you have done some video recordings of music videos and dance covers. So what is the hardest part about all this?

Saida: The most difficult MV I’ve done was Ensemble Stars. My solo cosplay in the MV was a character called Arashi. Ensemble Stars was my first solo MV, so I had to play the role for 24 hours and it took a lot of hard work.

Q: When you have a new project or a new idea, what is your step by step process?

Saida: First, I tell my storyboard artist whenever I want to do a cosplay shoot and I create the costume for the storyline. After that, I discuss with my friends and ask them if they want to join me. If my friends agree, I’ll create a timetable and scout for locations for shooting. To me, storyboarding plays a huge importance in the process.

Q: Do you edit your own photos?

Saida: Yes, I do edit my own photos. If my photographer is done with shooting and sends the photos to me and if I feel it doesn’t need any more editing, I’ll upload it straight away. If it needs any additional editing, I will edit it myself.

Q: You said that in Korea, there’s a lot of stereotyping in the cosplay scene. Could you explain further on what are those stereotypes?

Saida: There are many stereotypes like cosplay is too sexualized for the public. Many cosplayers in Korea want to make a change to destroy that stereotype. Mostly by aiming for accuracy and perfection than sexualizing their cosplays.

Q: Among all the cosplays that you have done, which one was your favourite and why?

Saida: It’s really difficult to choose but it’s probably my Judy cosplay because of the animation which both kids and adults love. When you search Judy cosplays on Google, you probably would find sexualized versions of Judy and kids would be shocked if they were to see it. So I want to cosplay Judy in a non sexualized way, so that even the kids can enjoy my cosplay. That’s why I like it.

Q: Among all the Disney Princesses that you have cosplayed, which was your favourite?

Saida: I really love Ariel from The Little Mermaid. I wore Ariel’s costume at Disneyland and it was one of my biggest photo shooting projects and definitely my favourite Disney Princess cosplay.

Q: So, right now THE MAGIC RAIN is running a campaign, called “Face Your Fears”. When you first started cosplaying, you mentioned that you used to be shy, how did you overcome it?

Saida: When I cosplay, I imagine what the character is feeling at that situation and much more. I have to portray that emotion in my face and act like I’m not nervous. That’s why I usually work with my friends; I don’t get nervous when I’m doing a photoshoot with them.

Q: What do you like about Malaysia so far?

Saida: I love the weather here, it’s so warm. I also love all the delicious food, especially Bak Kut Teh.

Q: Is there anything you want to say to your Malaysian fans?

Saida: Thank you so much for inviting to Malaysia. I’m really thankful for all my fans for supporting. I always want to be a better cosplayer and your support helps me in so many ways.

It was amazing to have the chance to interview SAIDA and getting to know a lot of things about her. We definitely can’t wait for her to come back in Malaysia once again!
