Penguin Highway is an upcoming animated film set to be released in Japan on the 17th of August.

Based on a fantasy novel written by Tomihiko Morimi, the most intriguing plot point of the film is that it centers around the appearance of a mysterious group of penguins in an otherwise typical suburban neighbourhood. The protagonists of the story are a young boy named Aoyama and an older woman working as a dental assistant whom he has a crush on.

Details regarding the original novel and the overarching plot of the film are sparse, but the trailer featured here indicates that there is a supernatural phenomenon behind everything and hints at the developing relationship between the two main characters as they attempt to investigate the reason behind the penguins’ appearance.

It’s likely that we’ll have to wait quite a while before we ever get to see Penguin Highway over in Malaysia, but in the meantime, fans of Utada Hikaru will be excited to hear her performance of the film’s theme song, “Good Night”.

It’s been a great year for Utada Hikaru fans as we were treated to the official Kingdom Hearts III theme song: “Don’t Think Twice” and the new single: “Hatsukoi” earlier this year. Things get even better with “Good Night”, which is a must-listen as Utada Hikaru’s vocals are on top form here, with this track easily being one her most hauntingly beautiful performances to date.
