Sanrio’s popular gothic mascot Kuromi is officially getting her own feature-length animated movie, tentatively slated for a 2027 release. The news was announced via a special video message featuring Kuromi, with an official poster, website and X account launched in conjunction with the announcement.
Kuromi first appeared in Sanrio’s 2005 anime series Onegai My Melody, where she served as a rival figure to the series’ protagonist My Melody. She gradually gained popularity for her dark aesthetic and cheeky personality, eventually leading her own web series in 2023, titled Kuromi’s Pretty Journey.
The upcoming film reflects Kuromi’s growing popularity amongst Gen Z and millenial consumers, with Kuromi ranking 4th in Sanrio’s 2026 Character Ranking poll. She recently appeared in the 2025 Netflix stop-motion series My Melody and Kuromi; and signed to major label Toy Factory as an musical artist in that same year.
