It’s finally here! Netflix has finally revealed the trailer and release date for the third and final chapter of the Mononoke movie trilogy. Coming this 29th of September, Chapter III serves as the conclusion of the story at the Ōoku, which began with “Mononoke the Movie: The Phantom in the Rain (2024)”, and continued in “Mononoke the Movie: Chapter II – The Ashes of Rage (2025)”.
The setting of the trilogy is the Ōoku, the women’s quarters for the shogun’s wife, concubines and female servants. Each movies focuses on women of increasingly higher rank in the Ōoku, with the finale centered on the apex rank, Midaidokoro.
Throughout the first two movies, we learn that the Ōoku has a tragic and dark past. The negative emotions of those who suffered in the Ōoku eventually lead to the manifestation of Mononokes. This draws the attention and arrival of the Kusuriuri to quell these monsters born of sorrow.
The Kusuriuri in the movie trilogy is different from the one in the beloved series. The movie trilogys Kusuriuri is named “Ri”, which we learned when Twin Engine announced plans for a new project, featuring a third Kusuriuri named “Ken”.
