The highly anticipated anime film Yuri!!! on Ice the Movie: Ice Adolescence has unfortunately been cancelled. The news was announced on the official website with a notice from the film’s production committee and animation studio MAPPA. The notice is roughly translated as follows:
“Thank you very much for always supporting Yuri!!! on ICE. We have decided to cancel the production of Yuri!!! on ICE: ICE ADOLESCENCE, whose release had been postponed. We sincerely apologize for not being able to meet the expectations of everyone who has continued to support us over the years.
The entire production committee and staff worked together to create this work, and we have continued to have frequent discussions and adjustments in order to deliver it to everyone, but due to various circumstances, we have come to the decision that we have no choice but to abandon production. We would like to sincerely apologize to everyone who has been looking forward to the release of this work”
The film was originally announced in April 2017 following the viral success of the 12-episode anime series that premiered in October 2016. However, the film was delayed from its 2019 opening date in order to “substantially scale up the content more than originally planned.”
In 2020, the last update before the film’s cancellation stated that production was “still ongoing with the aim of further enriching the film,” but no release date could be confirmed.
