While originally set to come to theaters in January 2026, it looks like “The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender” (working title) will no longer be making its debut on the big screen. Instead, Avatar Studios will be premiering the film, as well as the upcoming Avatar: Seven Havens, on the streaming service Paramount+ sometime this autumn.
Collaborating with Studio Mir from Korea to animate the film, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender will tell the story of the Aang and Gaang as they grow up, years after the war in the original series. The premise of the film follows Aang, the titular last airbender, learning of an ancient power that could potentially revive his culture from extinction.
The film will be directed by Lauren Montgomery, who worked with Avatar Studios before for Season 3 of the original series, and who made her animated film debut with Superman: Doomsday. Serving as co-directors are William Mata (Dora and the Fantastical Creatures) and Steve Ahn (Voltron: Legendary Defender).
Voicing Aang and the Gaang are Eric Nam (Aang), Jessica Matten (Katara), Román Zaragoza (Sokka), Dionne Quan (Toph Beifong) and Steven Yeun (Zuko). The film will also feature a star-studded cast of supporting characters, featuring Ke Huay Quan, Dave Bautista, Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, and Freida Pinto, to name a few.
