Cosmic Princess Kaguya! will arrive on Netflix this January 22, marking director Shingo Yamashita’s first-ever feature-length film. Yamashita is best known for his work on the opening sequences for Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1, Chainsaw Man, and the Urusei Yatsura remake.
The film re-imagines The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, said to be Japan’s oldest folktale, with a modern soundtrack and vibrant visuals. It follows Iroha, a high school girl, and Kaguya, a magical princess who enlists Iroha’s help to become a streamer. Unbeknownst to them, ominous forces lie in the shadows, waiting to take Kaguya back to the moon.
Aside from being Yamashita’s directorial debut, the film has also earned buzz for its star-studded soundtrack, featuring prominent Vocaloid producers such as ryo (supercell), kz (livetune), 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra, and yuigot. Animation for the film is provided by Studio Colorido and Yamashita’s Studio Chromato.
Yamashita shared with Netflix, “This is my first full-length original animated film. I poured into it everything I’ve learned about visual expression, my love for unique characters, and my deep affection for the internet culture that’s continued since the 1990s. It’s a bright, fun film — so please sit back, relax, and enjoy it!”
