In possibly one of the strangest fandom crossovers to ever hit the Internet, Vivienne ‘Vivizepop’ Medrano, the founder of SpindleHorse Toons (Hazbin Hotel, Helluva Boss) announced at Animate Orlando that the studio’s new Australian subsidiary SpindleRoo is working on an animated pilot based on the cult-classic webcomic Homestuck, starring Undertale creator Toby Fox as the series’ protagonist John Egbert.
Rounding out the cast are Cherami Leigh (Makoto Nijima from Persona 5) as Rose Lalonde, Colleen O’Shaughnessey (Tails from the Sonic franchise) as Jade Harley, Adam McArthur (Marco from Star Vs. The Forces of Evil) as Dave Strider, and Brandon Winckler (Eugeo from Sword Art Online) as Karkat Vantas. Veteran voice actor Richard Horvitz will serve as the series’ voice director.
Although Homestuck is commonly referred to as a webcomic, the series is perhaps more accurately described as a multimedia project that combines traditional comics, text logs, animations, and even interactive games to form a sprawling narrative about aliens, alternate universes, and branching timelines. The series ran from 2009 to 2016, where it captivated up to 600,000 site visitors per day at its peak.
It’s also worth mentioning that Homestuck creator Andrew Hussie and Toby Fox are close friends, with Fox having composed several pieces of music for Homestuck (including a piece that would go on to become the iconic Undertale boss fight theme Megalovania). He also famously began working on Undertale while living with Hussie, which might help to explain why the famously enigmatic video game creator is stepping into the spotlight as the series’ lead voice actor.
It is currently unknown if Homestuck will be greenlit for a full-length animated series, much like previous SpindleHorse projects Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss. The pilot itself will be released on Medrano’s YouTube channel this September.
