Earlier this March, Rose Lam, the Global Production Director of Riot Games’ live-action division Riot Studios, met with Nguyen Van Hung, Vietnam’s Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism to discuss plans to film a 9-episode League of Legends TV series in Vietnam’s Cat Ba Archipelago. The news was first announced by Vietnamese outlet Znews.
According to Lam, Riot had previously surveyed other countries in Asia such as Japan, Korea, and Thailand, before deciding that Vietnam would best suit the company’s creative needs. Cat Ba was selected due to its unique natural landscapes and ability to meet large-scale production requirements.
On the other hand, Minister Hung expressed his enthusiasm to see more international film projects come to Vietnam, but emphasised that the production team should abide by Vietnamese law and cultural sensibilities when working on the TV series, especially as Cat Ba is a UNESCO heritage site and its environmental protections should be given top priority.

It is currently unknown what this new live-action TV series will be about, but given that Cat Ba is surrounded by the ocean, and that Riot cited its natural landscapes as a major deciding factor, many fans have speculated that Riot is looking to produce a Bilgewater TV series.
Bilgewater is League of Legends’ pirate-themed region, home to some of the game’s most iconic champions, such as Miss Fortune, Gangplank and Illaoi. With the Cat Ba Archipelago boasting over 300 scenic islands, it seems like the perfect fit for a swashbuckling pirate adventure.

Filming for this currently untitled Riot Games project will begin in 2025.
