‘NOROI KAGO: The Grudged Domain’ Early Access Review – A Co-Op Horror Dive Into Japanese Folklore

There’s something spine-chilling about yokai, the supernatural beings of Japanese folklore. Pair that with a haunting black-and-white aesthetic and the chaotic fun of co-op survival, and you have NOROI KAGO: The Grudged Domain. Developed by Toydium and published by Toei Animation, this game is currently still in Early Access but is already showing its potential as a standout in the genre.

 A Yokai-Infused Experience

NOROI KAGO is a four-player cooperative survival horror game that drops players into a cursed, decrepit mansion. Your mission? Escape by purifying cursed items such as swords and armor while evading roaming yokai with distinct and terrifying mechanics.

So far, the game features two major threats:

  • Hyakume: A yokai covered in eyes that act as surveillance. Triggering these eyes can slow you down or even summon the monster itself.
  • The Spider Yokai: A relentless, fast-moving arachnid that embodies pure nightmare fuel.

As you and your friends fumble through this eerie setting, you’ll quickly realize the game isn’t just about outrunning yokai—it’s also about managing the looming curse. Spend too long hiding or making mistakes, and the curse meter fills, turning you into a half-yokai. While this form allows limited movement and attracts enemies, it also jeopardizes the run for the rest of your team.

Gameplay and Atmosphere

The gameplay is deceptively simple: find and cleanse six cursed items to escape. But every decision comes with a cost. Should you risk searching for talismans to lower your curse meter or press forward, knowing every second spent hesitating could doom your party?

What sets NOROI KAGO apart is its chilling atmosphere. The game’s monochromatic visuals and sparse, oppressive sound design amplify the tension. Every step, every creak of the floorboards, and every distant pitter-patter of yokai feet keeps players on edge.

The experience is amplified in multiplayer, where teamwork is essential. Assigning roles—one person to search for items, another to distract yokai, and another to manage cursed talismans—brings a layer of strategy to the chaos. Yet, the pressure to balance these tasks often leads to hilariously frantic moments that can only happen in co-op horror games.

Nods to Japanese Pop Culture

Fans of Japanese folklore and pop culture will appreciate the game’s references. The inclusion of Hyakume and nods to GeGeGe no Kitarō make NOROI KAGO feel like a love letter to yokai mythology. These cultural touches enhance the immersion and set it apart from other survival horror games.

Early Access and the Road Ahead

As an Early Access title, NOROI KAGO already boasts a strong foundation. But the roadmap hints at even greater things to come:

  • Early February 2025: A new yokai will join the roster, expanding the variety of gameplay challenges.
  • March 2025: A new stage and additional yokai promise to add more depth and replayability.
  • April 2025: Downloadable content with new character skins will allow for more personalization.

For now, the game is available on Steam at a launch discount, making it the perfect time to dive in.

Verdict: A Promising Addition to Co-Op Horror

If you love co-op horror games like Phasmophobia or Devour, NOROI KAGO: The Grudged Domain should be next on your playlist. The game combines a rich cultural theme with frantic, tense gameplay that shines brightest when played with friends.

With its compelling early access content and exciting updates on the horizon, NOROI KAGO is brimming with potential. Whether you’re a fan of yokai lore or simply looking for a game to test friendships, this one’s worth a try.
