Anne Shirley, an upcoming 24-episode anime series based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s classic novel Anne of Green Gables, is set to air on NHK Educational TV starting from April 5, 2025. The series is being adapted by The Answer, an anime production studio that was previously involved in films such as Your Name and Suzume.
The studio has released a new key visual and 15-second teaser trailer ahead of the series’ release, as well as a list of key production staff involved in the Anne Shirley anime series.
Anne of Green Gables is a 1908 novel written by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery, telling the story of Anne, an orphan adopted by a pair of middle-aged siblings named Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert. The book follows Anne’s ups and downs as she settles into life in the fictional Canadian town of Avonlea, which is inspired by the real-world location of Prince Edward Island.
The novel was translated into Japanese by Hanako Muraoka in 1952, where it became a beloved classic amongst Japanese readers. Nippon Animation previously produced two anime adaptations of the novel, with the first being directed by Isao Takahata in 1979, and the second directed by Katsuyoshi Watabe in 2009.
