Toei Animation Announces First Indie Horror Game, NOROI KAGO: the Grudged Domain

Toei Animation, in partnership with game development studio Toydium, will be releasing their first indie horror game titled “NOROI KAGO: the Grudged Domain“. Set to release in 2025, the game will make its global exhibition debut at Tokyo Game Show 2024 later this month.

“NOROI KAGO: the Grudged Domain” is a survival co-op horror game based around the theme of yokai, supernatural beings which stem from traditional Japanese folklore. The game allows for online co-op up to four players, where the aim is to escape from an enclosed space where yokai roam free.

The game is inspired by the chilling atmosphere of Japanese horror films. Immerse yourself in a unique art style, crafted to showcase the strong contrast between light and shadow. Much of the work is derived from Shigeru Mizuki, the original author of the manga “GeGeGe no Kitaro”. Every unsuspecting yokai creeping through the shadows is sure to incite more fear.

Yokai aren’t the only creatures you have to worry about. Throughout the realm, players will be inflicted by a curse, which gradually eats away at their bodies before turning them into half-demons. To break free from this curse, cooperation will be key.

In order to escape, you must perform a ritual to break the seal. However, the items necessary for the ritual are hidden in different locations each time you play. These items can help you escape the realm, hold back the yokai and even revive fallen allies.

“NOROI KAGO: the Grudged Domain” will be Toei Animation’s first ever indie game production. Best known for their work in the animation industry, Toei Animation has produced more than 13,316 episodes of TV series and over 258 long feature films since its founding in 1956.

The studio is best known for producing beloved series such as Dragon Ball, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, One Piece, Mazinger Z, Slam Dunk, Digimon, Pretty Cure, and more.
