Horror indie games are so back. The creative agency UUUM announced that a new game in the Ao Oni franchise is currently in development. The new game will be coming to Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam in 2025.
The original Ao Oni horror game was developed by “no props” and released in Japan in November 2008. The game quickly gained a cult following in Japan thanks to online playthroughs and livestreams. The franchise was later adapted into a sequel smartphone game, two feature-length movies, five light novels, and a short anime series.
Its story follows a boy named Hiroshi who, alongside his classmates, investigates a deserted mansion that is rumored to be haunted. They discover Ao Oni, a mysterious creature who pursues the group. Ao Oni “shrieks” chord until the player outruns him. If one of Hiroshi’s classmates are caught by Ao Oni, they are transformed into a creature.
Ao Oni is currently on sale on the Nintendo eShop and Steam until September 23rd, 2024 to celebrate the game’s number 1 ranking on the eShop store in Japan.
