Everything We Know About ‘Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess’ (So Far)

During the Xbox Partner Preview earlier this week, CAPCOM revealed a detailed look at their brand new IP. Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is a unique Japanese-inspired, single player action strategy game.

The combat in the game is inspired by the sacred Kagura dance, which is performed as a Shinto ritual dedicated to local divinities to pray for a good harvest. The dancer is usually adorned in gorgeous costumes and expressive masks inspired by the divinity.

Here’s everything we know about this highly anticipated CAPCOM title so far.

Main Story

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess takes place on the lush Mt. Kafuku, home of the Goddess. When an ominous black substance suddenly engulfs the mountain, the once resplendent mountain and peaceful lives of its villagers are thrown into turmoil. The source of the turmoil, the defilement, corrupts the entire mountain and the twelve masks containing the power of the Goddess are stolen.

The Maiden Yoshiro and her guardian Soh use the power of the masks to purge the defilement and perform rituals to return things to normal. A unique take on the action strategy genre, Kunitsu-Gami: The Path of the Goddess merges dancing sword action and strategic gameplay to create a distinct experience unlike any other.

Main Characters

You play as Soh, the protagonist and the Maiden’s guardian. Take up your sword and fight alongside the villagers to protect the Maiden from Seethe attacks, as she is the only one with the power to purge the defilement.

The villagers of Mt. Kafuku become your comrades after you save them from the defilement. You can even assign them roles to aid in the fight against the Seethe.

Finally, the Seethe are the evil spirits called upon by the defilement. They arrive with the night and will target the Maiden with a variety of terrifying attacks. The scene where a large amount of Seethe rushes to the Maiden is called Kunitsutsumi.

Combat & Gameplay

The day-night cycle is a crucial part of gameplay in Kunitsu-Gami: The Path of the Goddess. During the day, purge the defilement from the villages and position the villagers in preparation for the battle at night. During the night, give orders to the villagers and use dance-like sword techniques to protect the Maiden from the Seethe.

There are plenty of things to prepare before the battle at night. Playing as Soh, explore the villages and find villagers that have fallen victim to the defilement. You will need to locate and purge them of the defilement.

Rescued villagers can be assigned a variety of roles using the power of the masks to give them the ability to fight. Learn the characteristics of each role, place the villagers accordingly. and prepare for battle against the Seethe.

You may also find broken contraptions which can be repaired by the carpenter and act as extra protection for the Maiden.

At night, take up your sword as Soh and dispel the Seethe with dance-like sword techniques. Decide whether you will leave the fighting to the villagers, or whether you will handle it using Soh’s Dance Attacks. Test your strategic abilities with the constantly changing battlegrounds.

Not only that, there are powerful enemies that you will have to contend with throughout the night. These festering Seethe are infused with the power of the stolen masks and will surely push your battle prowess to its limits.
