PogChamp is one of the oldest emotes on Twitch and now it’s replaced for good. The livestreaming platform unveiled the new face of PogChamp after holding a community election slash livestream called “The PogChampening” on February 12th.
This change follows Twitch’s decision to remove the original PogChamp emote after its face, Ryan Gutierrez a.k.a. Gootecks, encouraged civil unrest on his social media platforms during the January 6th riot at the U.S. Capitol Building.
After his removal, the platform launched a campaign that changed the face of the PogChamp emote every day to reflect the diversity of its streamers. While this move had its intended effect of increasing awareness for lesser known streamers, it also resulted in increased harassment especially for people-of-colour.
Hopefully, the entrance of KomodoHype as the new face of PogChamp puts an end to the harassment. Its familiar surprised face has circulated Twitch over 400,000 times per day as users campaigned to get the lizard to where it is today. However, it’s too soon to tell whether the emote will rise to the same fame as its predecessor.
