It is always sweet to read a romance manga where the characters fall in love with each other, but it is even sweeter to tickle our funny bones with the hilarious awkward acts of the characters trying to accept each other’s feelings.
I honestly love to see some of the awkward antics of romantic comedy and most of the time the manga in itself are humorous. Here are 5 Romantic Comedy Manga you should be reading:
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
“High school student Chiyo Sakura one day confessed to her crush Umetaro Nozaki but was mistaken for a fan of his Shojo Manga. Nozaki instead gave her an autograph and when Sakura told him that she wanted to be with him, he invited her to his house to be his Shojo Manga assistance. As they work together on the Shojo Manga, they meet other classmates that serve as inspiration for Nozaki’s Shojo Manga.”
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun is set in a high school like most mangas in this genre but what sets it apart is the variety of characters, each with their own weird personalities, e.g. Nozaki is a tough and tall guy who has never fallen in love but writes a successful Shojo (Love) Manga. Each character with their personal quirk makes the reader fall in love with them and cheer for them to hopefully one day recognize their own feelings.
Hori san to Miyamura kun
“Bright and popular high school girl Kyoko Hori is the exact opposite of the gloomy and nerdy Izumi Miyamura. Outside of school however, Kyoko Hori dresses down as she takes care of household and her younger brother Souta, while Izumi Miyamura on the other hand has a bunch of tattoos and earrings outside of school. The two of them had a fateful meeting outside of school and promised to keep their real persona a secret from their schoolmate. They soon relate to each other as friends.”
This manga is more towards the fawning over the sweet and romantic couple of Hori and Miyamura while occasionally being funny. Although the romance side is more than its comedy, it doesn’t leave you with a bad taste as there are genuinely funny moments entwined into their sweet everyday lives. If you prefer to read a love story with some comedy, this manga is just right for you.
Jitsu wa Watashi wa
“Asashi Kuromine is a normal high school boy who can never keep a secret. One day he spots his classmate Yoko Shiragami after school in class unfolding her large pair of wings from her back. He discovers that Yoko is actually a vampire and is only able to attend high school if she kept her secret identity. Asashi now has the hard task to keep Yoko’s secret and his life keeps getting more difficult as he discovers more secrets from other classmates”
This romantic comedy manga takes a weird but interesting premise by exploring the idea of “interracial” relationship in an amusing way. As the story goes on, there will be more and more weird things added to the story like aliens, ghosts and even time traveling while keeping the romantic comedy theme of the story. Its a good read with weird humor and a sweet romantic plot between the characters.
Komi-san wa Komyushou Desu
“Shouko Komi, the beautiful ice queen of the elite Itan Private High School is revered and loved by every other students for her quiet cool nature. However, Hitohito Tadano seating beside Komi in the same class knows the truth that Komi is actually awkward and has a serious issue of communicating with others. Tadano promised Komi to help her find and become friends with 100 people.”
Komi-san wa Komyushou Desu is a sweet and sugary manga where the main protagonist, Komi, is unlike most other manga. Although she is beautiful and cool, she is so awkward that she starts shaking when someone talks to her. This makes a good comedy as the reader sees how Komi interact with her classmates and especially Tadano who is her first friend and crush. There is never enough sweetness and laughter in this Manga.
Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san
“The daily life of Takagi, a female student, mostly consists of teasing her crush and classmate Nishikata while Nishikata tries to get back at her and fails everytime. Follow their daily lives as they prank and tease each other while you laugh at their jokes”
The jokes and teasing between Takagi and Nishikata is frankly very funny especially when Nishikata tries so hard to get back at Takagi but fails miserably. Although in failure, the readers can see that Takagi still falls for him every time and vice versa. Although this manga is not as funny as Gekkan Shoujo or Komi-san for me, it still at times pulls my heart and get some laughter out of me.
I hope you get some laughter and sweet moments with the manga suggested as much as I have and still do. What do you think of the above manga? Do you have any recommendations you love? Let us know in the comments!
