Last weekend at Anime Expo 2018, Legendary Entertainment and Sunrise jointly dropped the bomb that a live-action feature film revolving around Gundam will be coming sometime in the future. This follows a trend in Hollywood surrounding giant robot IPs, from Spielberg’s latest ‘Ready Player One’ to (the one we’d rather forget ever happened) Bay’s ‘Transformers’ movies.
No word has been released on who will be the director, writer, or even the star of the upcoming movie. During the press conference, only a basic explanation of the Gundam universe was released in terms of story:
“The original Gundam series is set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity’s growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies. Eventually, the people living in the colonies seek their autonomy, and launch a war of independence against the people living on Earth.
Through the tragedies and discord arising from this human conflict, not only the maturation of the main character, but also the intentions of enemies and the surrounding people are sensitively depicted. The battles in the story, in which the characters pilot robots known as mobile suits, are wildly popular.”
Sad to say, that means we’ll have to wait longer for more information on the live-action adaptation. In the meantime, at least we can be assured that Sunrise (who is the original studio and producers of Gundam) are also behind the helm for this movie. Hopefully, they won’t let us down!
